Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Warriors Party

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with rich lore, a colorful mix of personalities, and a thrilling plot showcasing angels, evil spirits, and sinister influences expanding in influence within the city.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the latest installment of the new season are included.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

The third episode finished on a major cliffhanger and introduced the premier party of adventurers who will split off from the main group to embark on their independent quest, distinct from the additional parties.

This warrior group consists of the determined fighter (brought to life by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (the player), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

Considering an extensive roster, it was evident from the beginning that maintaining everyone at a single group would be impossible.

This explains, the opening chapters of the new season serve as an Prelude, weaving together the personal journeys before dividing into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Strategists, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

Per the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for players who are drawn to a typically action-packed fight-heavy narrative style where non-violent answers are rare.

Upon first impression, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander might appear unsuited, but the events of the third episode make it clear why these five characters are best suited for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

First, the team has a clear idea where to head next after a brutal opening clash with the enemy group.

Casimir of the deceased character—whose death initiated the story’s plot—used the foes for his personal gain, entering the secret base, striking the rogue, and stealing all the magical artifacts to auction.

The antagonist then paid off his obligations and fled to a fortified location in the remote area, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Cyd pursuing him.

Individual Reasons

Secondly, each character has a individual motive to depart Dol-Makjar:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, seeks retribution.
  • The knowledgeable figure is familiar with the region and advises that it is a nasty location.
  • The warrior and The healer, having defied his relatives’ demands to execute Teor and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their status as important members in House Halovar could assist the team reach areas they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, The grateful character pledged a eternal obligation to The cleric for his salvation and will now follow him wherever.

Wanted and Hunted

In addition, all of them are wanted by the authorities that control the setting for a range of causes, making remaining behind too risky:

  • The rogue and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and The cleric betrayed House Halovar and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • The target is marked for death by House Halovar.

This results in them few options but to head to the northern region in pursuit of Casimir.

What’s Next?

According to episode three’s Cooldown, we learn that the combat party will not appear next week, leaving the other eight cast members to form the Explorers and Schemers tables.

Audiences can anticipate learning which characters will be where in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, streaming live on the upcoming Thursday.
