RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of access tunnels leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were thousands of British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
