Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying these treatments need to be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to original weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become ravenous," described an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural management.
